Introduction to feminism

 Everyday Sexism

Watch the Everyday Sexism TED talk from Laura Bates (linked above) and answer the following questions:

1) Why did Laura Bates start the Everyday Sexism project?

To illustrate how women normalise abuse or sexual abuse as if it is a part of their daily lives, accepting it.

2) How does the Everyday Sexism project link to the concept of post-feminism? Is feminism still required in western societies?

It links as post-feminism in reality doesn't exist even though women have more rights than they use to. It has been set aside while men are still focus on stereotypes and holding power against females.

3) Why was new technology essential to the success of the Everyday Sexism project?

It was able to connect countless women from different countries to ages, disabled or not around the world in order for them to share their stories/experiences with others. It helped to show how females are neglected and are still contently suffering.

4) Will there be a point in the future when the Everyday Sexism project is not required? What is YOUR view on the future of feminism?

I believe that the world does not change easily in the sense that it is hard to change a large population of peoples mindset where these stereotypes/actions are engraved into them. The Everyday Sexism project is still open and receiving more and more messages everyday this just goes to show how women still suffer even if women still have 'rights'.

Media Magazine: The fourth wave?

Read the article: The Fourth Wave? Feminism in the Digital Age in MM55 (p64). You'll find the article in our Media Magazine archive here.

1) Summarise the questions in the first two sub-headings: What is networked feminism? Why is it a problem?

Networked feminism initially came from the waves were countless women gather and come back to claim their rights through different forms of protest through the past years. Since the 60s feminism has fought to recognise the social struggle of women on a number of different levels yet many still suffer the impact of men

2) What are the four waves of feminism? Do you agree that we are in a fourth wave of ‘networked feminism’?

The four waves are: late 19th to early 20thcenturies, with a main focus on suffrage. The ‘second wave’ began in the 1960s,
campaigning for the growth of equal rights and leading to the Equal Pay the third wave was the late 1990s,(often identified as post-feminism). The new fourth wave of feminism is also known as ‘networked feminism’. it aims to tackle social equality issues found both on, and using, modern technology.

3) Focus on the examples in the article. Write a short summary of EACH of the following: Everyday Sexism, HeForShe, FCKH8 campaign, This Girl Can.

Everyday sexism: The project was started by Laura Bates back in 2012 as a website which posted examples of sexism that users faced every day.
HeForShe: Watson’s campaign focuses on male support for gender equality, highlighting the fact that feminism is not about promoting matriarchy, but solidarity.
FCKHS campaign: The movement focuses on the modern representation of girls and the huge social inequalities they face, whilst featuring young girls ‘F-Bombing’ to highlight society’s imbalance when it comes to offences.
This Girl Can: first fitness campaign for women which doesn’t shame or exclude them, by sharing photos, videos and quotes of women without the usual sexual exploitation of a women’s fitness advert and without body shaming.

4) What is your opinion with regards to feminism and new/digital media? Do you agree with the concept of a 'fourth wave' of feminism post-2010 or are recent developments like the Everyday Sexism project merely an extension of the third wave of feminism from the 1990s?

In my opinion, I believe feminism shouldn't be seen as revenge where women only want pleasure in taking down men but instead should be viewed as a way of claiming the rights females should have without asking. This idea of inequality and separating the two genders has been in place for years where men have had a green for power. The media/social media has been able to open up many platforms for women to express their thoughts and share real life experiences with others. I agree with how the fourth wave is developing towards the Everyday Sexism project as women should be given a voice in society and a place to do whatever they want freely without the focus on stereotypes. Theses waves shouldn't be every few years but should be happening repetitively to communicate the suffering of women in our society that has been going on for so many years,
