Magazine cover learner response

1) Add your finished magazine cover as a JPEG image.

2) Type up your feedback from your teacher. If you've received this by email, you can copy and paste it across - WWW and EBIs. You don't need to include a mark or grade if you don't want to.

Mark out of 15 for Media Language: 14

Estimated A Level coursework grade: A*

WWW: This is very, very good – your cover genuinely sits alongside the real examples, and I think many people would struggle to pick out the A Level work in amongst the professional covers. That is an incredibly good sign – the requirement for A* at A Level is ‘approaching professional standards’ and in terms of photography and brand identity you are absolutely on that standard. Indeed, there are just a couple of minor elements that we need to look at in terms of reaching full marks. Your detailed research and planning is a real strength coupled with a fantastic sketch of your magazine front cover.

EBI: Ultimately, I agree 100% with your evaluation regarding the potential of using an image where the cover model looks directly at the camera to meet the conventions on your chosen brand. This perhaps makes it a little more difficult to award full marks. However, the main message is that this is top-quality work and exactly the level we’re aiming for next year.

LR: See blog.

3) Consider your mark against the mark scheme above. What are the strengths of your production based on the the mark scheme? Think about magazine cover conventions and the media language techniques you have used to communicate with your audience (e.g. mise-en-scene, camera shot etc.)

-Excellent application of knowledge and understanding of media language, demonstrated by the consistently appropriate and effective selection and combination of elements to communicate very clear meanings throughout the products.
-An excellent cross-media production that constructs very effective narratives and shows deliberate control of connotations and clearly and purposefully constructs points of view that embody values and attitudes.

4) Look at the mark scheme again. What can you do to move your mark higher and, if required, move up a level?

Make eye contact with camera as all of the Dazed front covers i wrote about were looking directly at the camera.

5) What would be one piece of advice you would give a student about to start the same magazine cover project you have just completed?

Planning out what you intend to take photos of and having a variety of cover lines pre planned as well. Visualising you final piece is a great way to not be all over the place and confused when taking photos and editing.
